Non-book materials come in a variety of audiovisual and computer formats.
They include video and audiocassettes, computer floppy disks, CD-ROMs, compact discs, etc.
Items may be individually packaged or in combination as kits. Non-book materials must have
secure handling during all steps of the receiving, cataloging and labeling processes.
Acquisitions:
- Acquisitions staff will process all non-book materials as quickly as possible.
If held over night, the materials must be locked in the Acquisitions Department Locked Cabinet.
- Once processed the items must be placed in the Locked Media Cabinet in the Preservation
Services Department workroom.
- Acquisitions will notify the Cataloging Department of items that are ready for cataloging
via e-mail. In the subject line identify the general category of the item placed in Locked
Media Cabinet (Music, Video or Computer.) In the body of the message indicate if any items
are RUSH. Address the e-mail to:

Cataloging:
- The appropriate cataloger (Diane David, music and audio formats; Heidi Hutchinson, computer
files; Linda Owen, video formats) will retrieve the items for cataloging as expeditiously as
possible.
- All video materials will receive priority cataloging with a targeted turnaround time of
three days. If this target time cannot be met, the cataloger will notify the head of the Copy
Cataloging Unit or Cataloging Department
- All materials must be maintained in a secure environment while in the department.
At the end of each work day items will be returned to the Locked Media Cabinet. If circumstances
prevent this action, materials may be locked in the cataloger's desk overnight only.
- When cataloging is completed the items must be returned to the Locked Media Cabinet and
the Processing Unit Head (Preservation Services) notified (Kit Rembert,
kitt@citrus.ucr.edu.)
Processing:
The Processing Unit (Preservation Services) will label, process and transport all non-book
materials within a secure environment.
All Staff:
Please assist in keeping non-book materials secure. If you notice non-book materials
in unsecured areas please notify your supervisor who will alert the appropriate person.
