How to Read Series Authority Records for the Serial Subsription Order Searcher

To determine how UCR Libraries treat a series, look in the authority record for the title, check the 644 (analyzation), 645 (tracing), and 646 (how classed) MARC fields. I find it easier to read from the bottom-Up, starting with the 646, then 645, and finally the 644 field.

644: f = full anals (analytics for each individual volume)
 p = partial anals (some vols have analytics, some do not)
 n = not analyzed (all volumes will be attached to parent bib record)
645: t = traced
 n = not traced
646: s = classed separately (monographic)
 c = classed together (serial or set)

The following example series is classed separately, traced, with full analytics. Since it is classed separately, it is a monographic series.

The following series is Classed together, traced, without analytics except issues that v.8:no.3 and v.13:2-3 will have analytic records. Since it is classed together, it is a serial. (This could also be a monographic set. Check the Bibliographic Record Format Field to determine whether serial or set. Format s = serial; Format a = set. A monographic set generally will be expected to have an end date or finite number of volumes published while a serial will not.) All issues will be cataloged under a single call number which is listed in the 050 field, in this case QK1 .F4.
