Library Instruction Services
Course-Related Instruction
We offer library instruction sessions tailored to meet the needs of
classes and their research assignments. These classes are usually
taught in our instruction rooms and give students hands-on experience with
library resources. We teach undergraduate and graduate students how to use
SCOTTY (the UCR Library Catalog), Melvyl and other electronic indexes and
databases, develop search strategies and skills to find, filter and evaluate
information, locate Internet resources, and more. We also provide library
instruction to other on-campus groups (e.g. staff, faculty). Request a
library instruction session by contacting:

Web Tutorials
UCR librarians have developed two online interactive tutorials to teach basic
information seeking skills to beginning researchers. The MAGician
tutorial is general in nature though somewhat oriented to social sciences and
humanities and Rivera Library. The Library
Research for Biology tutorial was developed for the Bio 5A course
and focuses on scientific information.
New Faculty Orientation
New faculty members are welcome to arrange a personalized orientation and tour

Other Instructional Support
- Reference By Appointment:
UCR students, faculty and staff can make appointments Monday-Friday, 9-5 for
one-on-one consultation with a reference librarian. This can be for the
purpose of getting started with a term paper, a research project, or just to
learn a new electronic database. Request appointments in-person, by
phone, via email, or online:
- Handouts
and Help Guides:
Various handouts describing library services are available at each library
and on the Library web site. For example, Proxy
Server Information describes how to log on to library
resources from your home or office computer. There are also guides that list
the search commands for SCOTTY, the MELVYL Catalog and many periodical
indexes, along with subject specific bibliographies and research guides.
- Course
Reserves:
Faculty can make course readings available to their students
by placing material on Reserve in any campus library.
